INVESTMENT APPROACH

Columna’s core strategy is to identify off-market opportunities and invest in a limited number of attractive companies in its target markets of Italy, Spain, Switzerland and France. We are able to provide tailored liquidity solutions for a full range of possible structures: from minority and control-oriented investments in well-managed and profitable businesses seeking to exploit unique market opportunities to portfolios of equity investments across later stage venture capital and mid-market buy-outs. This could also involve the acquisition of a controlling stake in end-of-life private equity funds with a view to realising value from the underlying portfolio investments.

Columna usually enters into a transaction with an identified strategic growth plan to deploy follow-on capital where aggregate capital commitments can range between Euro 15 million and Euro 50 million. Prior to investing, Columna commits a considerable amount of time and resources to evaluate and structure the opportunity, looking for deep value situations in sound businesses with growth potential across a range of industries.  We strive to gain a comprehensive understanding of the companies we invest in and create a close alignment of interest with the respective management teams.

Columna is a long-term investment partner and our investors give us the ability to hold on to great businesses for longer, provide follow-on capital to capitalise on opportunities and adapt the exit horizon to specific circumstances and strategy. We also actively manage our investments and work closely with management teams to drive organic growth and execute on consolidation opportunities.

Our business has been built on certain core principles that continue to define Columna:
  • We are Principals not Agents - Columna raises capital for specific investment opportunities and our interests are fully aligned with investors through a meaningful co-investment in each of our deals.
  • Entrepreneurial - Through hard work, passion and teamwork, we have built our business during the financial crisis and through the worst fund raising environment in the history of private equity. We think independently, seek to learn from mistakes and will continuously challenge existing biases and assumptions.
  • Integrity and transparency - We value our reputation and integrity. As a fiduciary of our investors’ capital and as active board member in our portfolio companies, we seek to be transparent and adhere to the highest levels of compliance and corporate governance.
  • Discretion, Reliability and Innovation - We deliberately keep a low profile as a key value driver for our investments is operating away from the crowd. We provide discreet solutions for our counterparties and have built a reputation as a reliable counterparty. We are able to structure innovative deals and transact quickly, discreetly and efficiently.

Columna recognises the importance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations and the role they play in long term sustainable value creation.

Our core principles and investment approach underpin our commitment to responsible investing.

Columna's approach to responsible investing begins with the team itself. We are committed to employing individuals who share our values of honesty, integrity and transparency.

We consider material environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in our pre-investment due diligence and in the monitoring of our portfolio companies.

Columna partners take board positions in all portfolio companies and we engage with company management to improve governance and reporting, and to incorporate ESG issues into decision-making processes.

We are a long-term investment partner
and seek to invest in sound businesses
with growth potential and strong
management teams.
